Aronia is a resistant plant. The high levels of polyphenoles of the fruit of aronia strengthen the defense of the plant of aronia and so the plant doesn’t have fierce enemies and illnesses. So as cultivation aronia can easily be organic, without losing its productivity. The only notable threat can be considered wild birds, which are attracted by the fruits of aronia. In order to avoid the loss of production by the birds the conventional methods can be used that are applied to other cultivations (nets, scarecrows, etc.).

DSC_0113Aronia has specific high requirements in moisture in order to be ensured the right development of the plant its adequate watering is necessary. Special attention should be given to watering during the early years of the plant development and during the summer periods and specifically when there are time periods with prolonged drought. At the same time attention should be paid to the proper drainage of soil where the cultivation is placed, as the plant is susceptible to excess water.

Before the placement of aronia cultivation some typical operations of soil improvements must be made. These operations are predicted for the placement of fruitful cultivation. In the case of aronia the good cleaning of the field from the wild seeds, both before the establishment of the cultivation, and during the first years of the plant development is specifically crucial, as the wild seeds is a basic factor of obstruction of the right development of the plant and the reduction of the productivity of the cultivation. After the age of 4-5 years the plant develops a resisant root system through the shoot and the cleaning of the wild seeds is necessary only between the lines of the cultivation.

DSC_0032The plants can be planted either dense or sparse (2-3 m the distance between the plants and 3-4 m the distance between the lines). In the denser planting greater productivity can be achieved but in the sparser planting the air is circulating better so the danger of disease development is smaller.

The harvesting of the production takes place from the middle of August till the end of October. The indication that the fruit is ready is given from its dark black color, while we can decide with the biggest accuracy about its crop, when we have the appropriate means for the measurement at our disposal and the choice of the ideal level of anthocyanines of the fruit. The harvesting can be handmade or by the use of mechanical means, while the plants are quite resistant in the mechanical load. The manual method is indicated when the fruit is intended for fresh consumption, while if aronia is intended for procession or freezing the advantages of mechanical harvesting can be reaped.
